THERE is a need to come up with an advisory and consultative team drafting the restoration or any development plans to be implemented for the heritage church in Cortes.
This as developments in Bohol’s treading into the unknown waters of cultural heritage has opened a window of opportunity for well meaning citizens to take a second look at their surviving heritage structure. The resurgence of interest in restoring and conserving the Church by some Cortesanons who desire to pitch in small donations for the restoration and conservation has prodded the need for the group absent any other formal group in place. Several people in Cortes have slowly learned the value of the centuries old church here, one that took their forefathers countless years to build. True enough, time, cruel effects of climate change and the apparent ignorance of past caretakers has dealt nasty marks on the church. When I was younger sacristan, I could still recall opting to sit on the low ledge embellished by Arabic blue glazed tiles (circa 1910?) forming a neat baseboard along the sides of the misahan. This I do while playing with the rueda of brass bells during communion, says a Church worker. Now both of the rueda and the ledge are lost for no reason at all. Lost too are the precious glazed tiles. These have been recently pulverized, bits and pieces could still be found near the Andas. Maroon painted cement ledges replace the beautiful blue tiles. The glazed Arabic tiles worth much more than the 16 x 16 ceramic tiles we could buy now at any hardware have been pulverized for plain cement. That is what, to some people, is sensible We could not agree. It is in this very vein that we are calling well meaning Cortesanons who are engineers, architects, visual artists and students of these disciplines to come out and help organize the pool of consultants to draft the restoration plan for our church. Leading the group are Vice Mayor and Engr. Rodrigo Dennis Uy, and Architects Reynan Lampa, Ramonito Chiu and Martian Iyoy. An organizational meeting is set anytime in the next few days. For more information, call or text Rod Uy (09173042784) and Reynan Lampa (09175039158). |
