Dusk is usually dark at the river in Junction, Cortes where the saltwater meets and mingles with the fresh water from its headwaters.
But with a theatrically lit set and few tricks, the riverbank village center takes a magical look with spotlights beaming and heightened anticipation brought by the higantes joining the spectators for the formal launching of Teatro Abatan, July 22.
Teatro Abatan, a collection of community theaters from Cortes, Maribojoc, Antequera, Balilihan and Catigbian would unite to empower people, in a larger than life mission using the area’s rich culture and heritage as the source of power against oppressive poverty.
Teatro Abatan takes its name from the venue where the sea and fresh water meet. It also sits as the fitting venue for the Teatro Abatan’s weekly fare of plays and cultural numbers in a dinner theater concept.

Why Didn’t I think Of That?
How Tamblot could have tricked the friar
SINCE I learned the story of how Tamblot, the diwatahan of Malabago defeated the Spanish friar, I have ceaselessly wondered.
Was it indeed some act of magic owing to his being a tambalan or is the story just a concoction of some pregnant minded historian to make fun of the old people.
The historical fact is, in the battle as to who should have religious jurisdiction over the community in Malabago, the Spanish friar who offers Christianity lost in the contest against Tamblot. The two were facing off as to who between them and their gods, could produce rice and wine from bamboo.

TIME flows with the ebb of Abatan’s tides.
And these tides that constantly swell the river has been Nature’s generous hand nurturing the river ecosystem that allows the teeming of raw materials that weavers of Cortes, Maribojoc, Balilihan and Catigbian gather to sell at the early Sunday basket flea market in Antequera.
As an apt tribute to the bountiful grace of woven, spread, rolled or twined baskets that tell as much of the people as of the culture of the river communities, the Abatan musicale play of Tamblot was conceptualized as a celebration and thanks giving.

Ang kasaysayan, ilabi na sa nakaykay tang mga sugilanon magtug-an nga kanhiay pa, dihay gitamud nga pangulo nga naghari sa kapatagag kahumayan sa ulohang bahin sa suba, sa kinatibuk-ang Camayaan. (Labut sa iyang gihari-an ang mga patag sa Catigbian nga gitikad sa mga sakop ni Gaum (Gaam), sa mga apalehan ug bo’otan sa Antequera, sa mga kamotehan ug balanghoyan sa Balilihan ug sa mga humayan sa Maribojoc)
Gihinganlan sijag si Tumod, tingali kay sija ang panguo sa mga magtutumod sa duma ngadto sa gingharian sa Dapitan.
Si Tumod maoy dakudako sa mga mag-uumang midangop usab sa suba aron makakuhag tubig mainom, ipangwaswas sa mga himi ug isabaw sa niluto.
Uso pod nila ang pagtumod og dagkong kahoy nga iluwan sa mga gigakit nga kawajan og botong, sakyag duma ug itumod, lakip na ang kawajan sa mga katilingabg nagtukod og panima’y sa Dapitan, tungatunga sa dakung Po’o ug sa Panggao.
Si Tumod ug ang katilingban sa Camayaan (kay daghang maya nga modugok sa humay og mais) maoy usa sa mga gisaligang tinubdan sa pagkaon sa tumoranan sa Dapitan.
